Prologue and Epilogue

Do you read prologues and epilogues in stories, or do you skip over them to get to the meat of the story?

I'm the kind of person that would normally skip the prologue, or not buy the book if I open the first few pages to find a prologue, but what about you?

In general, a prologue is a short introduction before the first chapter of a book to explain some history or detailed background that absolutely cannot be shown any other way throughout the book. The same thing applies with an epilogue. An epilogue would normally find good usage after the last chapter of a lengthy novel to help explain the fate of certain characters when any other form would prove boring to the reader.

I ask this question because I will soon publish a short story with both a prologue and epilogue. The story is told through the point of view of a scribe in fifteenth-century china. It is a bit of alternate history, I suppose, and that's where the prologue comes into play. The story will be titled "The Fifth Beauty" and features my main character, Azra, from my paranormal novel "Lovestruck Succubus." In this story, the actions of Azra, and the scribe, bring about the discovery and development of Lapsang Souchong tea, a highly sought-after black tea dried over pinewood fires.

Anyway, the prologue gives a brief history of the four ancient beauties of China. I suppose my story is a kind of erotic alternate history.  Hey don't laugh. Just wait and see what Azra, my demon succubus character, does to James Morrison of the Doors to help bring about his demise! The epilogue in my story will also contain a brief history, but will tell about how the scribe became famous and rich, and his new tea became an expensive commodity.

Tell me what you think. Would you ever read a short erotic story that contains both a prologue AND an epilogue?

End of the World? I'll Keep Writing.

I felt obligated to post something today about the end of the world. According to Harold Camping, who also predicted this event in 1994, today, May 21st 2011 marks the day when all true believers will be taken up to heaven. His concept is that this event will begin somewhere, and then sweep across the world as if moving through time zones. I personally just wanted to post something referring to the end of the world so it could be picked up by Webbot, the forecasting tool originally designed for guessing stock trends and now used by the CIA because of its accuracy, and give it something else to think about.

For the rest of you, this is a great day to put off doing laundry, cleaning the garage or the bathroom, or paying the bills ... just in case.

Coming Soon - Window Treatment

Hang in there! It won't be long now. My latest spicy story "Window Treatment" is due for release in the next few weeks.

Wendy finds herself caught in an escalating spiral of voyeurism and exhibitionism when she mistakingly catches her across the street neighbors in an intimate moment. She cannot help but watch as they make passionate love, and soon finds she has a growing need of her own to fulfill.

Problem is, when she finally looks up from her self pleasure, she finds the two in the apartment across from her staring at her through a telescope and enjoying her solo activities. Well, two can play at this game, she thinks, and proceeds to buy a telescope of her own in hopes of catching them at their own dirty game and embarrassing them into minding their own business.

But, when she sets everything up and turns on the lights to announce she is watching them, it only seems to fuel their exhibitionism. Time to bring in the big guns. The next day, when her boyfriend returns from a business trip, she plans on putting on a little show of her own.

At some point, she really cannot remember when, the game becomes an addiction as she rushes home each night in hopes of watching the couple or performing with her boyfriend in front of them.

Just where is all of this leading to?

As you can see, I'm still working on the blurb. Good news is I may decide to offer this work free on Smashwords for a limited time. After that, it will go on sale on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and everywhere.
